Fuse is one of the component used on automotive industry including motorcycles. Main function for safety when overload current flowing inside the component, fuse shall disconnect the wave.
Until today, there are five types of fuse you should know. Here we shall discuss in detailed.
1. Cartridge Fuse

This first type also known as stone fuse. Body based made of ceramic, shaped like a bottle and medium length.
Other than in automotive, fuse is also required in electricity of all devices we commonly use.
In time, with the evolving technology in modern days, cartridge fuse is no longer used in sophisticated type of automotive.
2. Tube Fuse

The tube fuse is the second type of fuse, also known as cylinder tube, or glass fuse. This still commonly used in motorcycles unlike the cartridge type.
It has a cylinder shape with a glass main frame body.
The glass body enable people to see inside the fuse and detect if any problem or short circuit in the fuse.
The end of the fuse in circular shape made of iron materials. Commonly, the fuse for automotive industry, espescially in the 80’s. It may still be used in several type of motorcycles but not much.
3. Box fuse

The third type is the box fuse. The fuse has a box shape. the size is quite big and equipped with a window on top to monitored its capacity.
For identification, its designed colorful. Mostly found in vehicles.
Code and color in this box fuse makes it easier to distinguish one from another. Each also differ in the current capacity.
Here are the types of box fuse based on colors and current capacity:
- Pink, capacity in 30 Ampere.
- Green, capacity in 40 Ampere
- Red, capacity in 50 Ampere
- Yellow, capacity in 60 Ampere
- Black, capacity in 80 Ampere
- Blue, capacity in 100 Ampere
4. Plate Fuse

The forth type is a plate fuse. Not so many people who may have known about this kind of fuse. It current capacity is quite big, more than 30 Ampere.
It holds as a safety for electricity current, mainly in cars. Therefore, it is commonly use in components with a large electricity current.
Plate fuse covered in black plastic material. The installation is not easy. This is because the point tip which works to electrify the component needed screwed on to its place.
Other than that, to read the current capacity of the fuse you can read it from the name plate underneath the connector plate.
5. Blade Fuse or Embedded Fuse

The last type, which is quite popular widely used in automobile is the blade fuse.
Widely used in a more complex automotive vehicles. Mainly because the bigger electricity current acquired to fulfill the vehicle needs. This can only be supplied by the blade fuse. To install this fuse you need to have it embedded on its sitting which is similar with the box fuse, just bigger in size.
It has a flat thin body and colored coded to identify the specification and capacity.
Below here are the blade fuse types and the current capacity’s:
- Yellowish brown, capacity in 5 Ampere
- Brown, capacity in 7,5 Ampere
- Red, capacity in 10 Ampere
- Blue, capacity in 15 Ampere
- Yellow, capacity in 20 Ampere
- Transparent, capacity in 25 Ampere
- Green, capacity in 30 Ampere
Those are the fuse types you should know in automotive with functions. In summary, fuse have been used from a long time with the existence of the cartridge fuse, which is now rarely been use. Along with the evolving technology and the complexity in automotive nowadays.
